Multiple law enforcement officers were shot in Charlotte NC on Monday when a US. Marshals task force was serving a warrant at a home, officials said.
Four officers were fatally shot and four others were injured, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a news conference.
The shooting happened around 3:21 p.m. in the 5800 block of Old Concord Road in northeast Charlotte, Jennings said.
The officers were serving a warrant for a fugitive who was wanted on federal charges, Jennings said.
When the officers knocked on the door, the suspect opened fire, striking several officers, Jennings said.
The officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed, Jennings said.
The four officers who were killed were identified as:
- Deputy Sheriff James C. Soltis, 52, of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office
- Detective Kevin M. Fish, 46, of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department
- Officer Carla E. Daniels, 44, of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department
- Detective Patrick J. O'Brien, 35, of the US Marshals Service
The four officers who were injured were transported to the hospital, where they are in stable condition, Jennings said.
The suspect was identified as Pedro A. Vargas, 33, of Charlotte, Jennings said.
Vargas had a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for assault and battery, drug possession, and weapons violations, Jennings said.
The shooting is under investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the FBI.
