Upset Marks the Highest-Seed Exit in the Tournament
In a major upset, Daniil Medvedev, the world's No. 5 seed, has been eliminated from the French Open in the first round. Medvedev was defeated by Australia's Alex de Minaur in four sets, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-5.
This is the first time Medvedev has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since the 2019 Australian Open. His best performance in the French Open remains a quarter-final run in 2021.
De Minaur, ranked 24th in the world, played aggressively throughout the match, hitting 44 winners compared to Medvedev's 26.
Medvedev's elimination is the biggest upset so far in the tournament, and it leaves the top half of the draw wide open.
