Malaysia to Adopt Dual Wholesale Network Model for 5G Rollout
Background
Last week, Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching announced in Parliament that Malaysia would be adopting a dual network model for its 5G rollout next year. This move is part of the government's broader 5G policy, which aims to establish a competitive and efficient 5G market.
Dual Network Model
The dual network model involves the establishment of two separate wholesale networks, one operated by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and the other by a consortium led by Telekom Malaysia (TM). These wholesale networks will then provide access to 5G services to retail service providers, who will in turn offer services to consumers and businesses.
Benefits of the Model
The dual network model is expected to bring several benefits to Malaysia, including:
- Enhanced competition, leading to lower prices and better services for consumers
- Reduced risk of monopoly and greater market stability
- Increased investment in 5G infrastructure and services
- Accelerated 5G adoption and innovation
Next Steps
The government is currently in the process of finalizing the details of the dual network model, including the allocation of spectrum and the licensing of retail service providers. The model is expected to be implemented in early 2024.
