Cardinals Shortstop Tommy Edman Signs New Five Year Contract

Cardinals Shortstop Tommy Edman Signs New Five-Year Contract

Edman Set to Stay in St. Louis

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed shortstop Tommy Edman to a five-year, $65 million contract extension, the team announced Monday. The deal includes a club option for a sixth year, which could make the total value of the contract $75 million.

The Deal

Edman's contract is the largest ever given to a Cardinals shortstop. The previous record was held by Jhonny Peralta, who signed a four-year, $53 million contract in 2014.

Edman's contract is also the largest ever given to a player who has only played one full season in the major leagues. Edman made his MLB debut in 2019 and has quickly become one of the best young players in the game.

Edman's Value

Edman is a versatile player who can play several positions, including shortstop, second base, and third base. He is also a good hitter and has a knack for getting on base.

In 2020, Edman led the NL in hits (65) and stolen bases (27). He also finished in the top 10 in the NL in batting average (.314) and on-base percentage (.364).

Edman has also been a valuable contributor to the Cardinals' defense. He has a strong arm and good range at shortstop.

The Cardinals' Outlook

The Cardinals have been one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past several years.

With Edman signed to a long-term contract, the Cardinals are well-positioned to continue their success for years to come.
