Queensland reports 18 COVID-19 deaths, highest number of fatalities in the state
With the days of COVID-zero over, Queensland is at a critical point in its pandemic response
The focus needs to shift from case numbers to hospitalizations and deaths
Queensland has recorded the deaths of 18 more people with COVID-19, the highest number of fatalities reported in the state in a single day since the pandemic began.
Of the 18 people who died, 13 were unvaccinated, two had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, five had received two doses, and four had received three doses.
The deaths bring the total number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Queensland to 1,067.
Queensland's Chief Health Officer, Dr. John Gerrard, said the state was at a critical point in its pandemic response, with the days of COVID-zero over.
"We need to shift our focus from case numbers to hospitalizations and deaths," Dr. Gerrard said.
"The vast majority of people who are dying from COVID-19 are unvaccinated or have only received one dose of a vaccine."
Dr. Gerrard urged Queenslanders to get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible.
"Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19," he said.
Queensland has recorded a total of 1,033,709 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
There are currently 1,035 people in hospital with COVID-19 in Queensland, including 46 in intensive care.
